Airlines come out in support of c-charge
11/08/2008
British Airways (BA) is one of four airlines that have come out in support of the proposal to overhaul Manchester's public transport system in return for a congestion charge.
Along with BA, Alpha Airports Group, SSP UK Air and VLM Airlines have all joined United City, an organisation that supports the Transport Innovation Fund (Tif) bid.
Manchester Airport has also become a member of United City, mainly because the Metrolink light rail network will be extended to the hub.
Among United City's 107 members are high street chain Timpson, Manchester Arndale, Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust and property company Bruntwood.
Ken Knott, founder member of United City, said that every piece of research into the issue of road congestion has shown that investment and road charging "will bring considerable benefits" to Greater Manchester.
BA and the other four airlines employ a fifth of the workforce at Manchester's international airport.
