Businesses divided on transport plan

26/08/2008

Businesses in Manchester are divided about the Transport Innovation Fund (Tif), the results of a new survey indicate.

A poll of just over 1,000 business leaders found that 50 per cent are against the scheme, which would see the city given £2.7 billion to invest in public transport in return for implementing a congestion charge.

When asked whether the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities should accept the money, 45 per cent said no and 42 per cent replied yes, reports Crain's Manchester Business.

Manchester city council's chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein told the publication: "This indicates the business community holds a range of different views about the issue and has not voted against the Tif bid as suggested."

Meanwhile, Trafford council has postponed plans to consult local companies about the project because it has been unable to obtain sufficient information about the proposals.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18749062-ADNFCR
