LS Lowry miniature sketch auctioned
15/11/2007
A pencil sketch on a cigarette packet by iconic Manchester artist LS Lowry has £5,280 at auction.
Lowry, a non-smoker, made the drawing on the inside of a packet of Woodbines and gave it to a friend who lived in Manchester.
The drawing of a football ground and an industrial landscape is around two inches wide and two inches tall
Stephen Sparrow, from Cheshire-based Peter Wilson Auctioneers, said the tiny drawing is incredible.
"It's the kind of quirky thing that any collector would love to own and there was a great deal of interest," he told the BBC.
"He often did sketches on anything he could find, be it a menu or whatever. These artists never stopped doodling so they would use anything."
In May, five LS Lowry paintings - valued at £1 million - were stolen from a house in Cheadle Hulme. The artist's palette and paintbrushes were also taken.
