Labour conference made £18m

The Labour Party conference generated an estimated £18 million for Manchester –£3 million more than in 2006.

Manchester city council estimates came after 11,000 delegates were reported to have visited the city over four days for the annual event.

Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "Manchester is a wonderful city and a great place to hold a conference. We look forward to returning in 2010."

Demonstrations were kept under control, assistant chief constable David Thompson said.

He praised people and businesses that he said were vigilant during the conference and "very friendly".

The chief executive of Greater Manchester Chamber said the city's hospitality industry and retailers had benefited most.

Angie Robinson said the event had been a great success for shops, bars and restaurants.

Chief executive of marketing Manchester Andrew Stokes said the success of the conference had proved the city was "the best political party conference venue in the country".
