London Underground-style map for Manchester

28/09/2007

Manchester transport chiefs have launched a colour-coded map of the local rail network, similar to the London Underground map.

The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Enterprise (GMPTE) has designed the map, which also features bus interchanges and the Metrolink light rail system.

It is hoped that by imitating the famous Underground map, Greater Manchester residents will be encouraged to explore the city-region.

Michael Renshaw, GMPTE service delivery director, said: "The new colour map makes it easy to see which services you'd need to get to travel from one end of the county to the other.

"Passengers on the London Underground regularly change services to get to their final destination."

The GMPTE has printed 20,000 copies of the booklet, which can be picked up in ticket offices and Travelshops.

Earlier this month, the Northern Way said that high-speed rail links between Manchester and London would generate £10 billion for the national economy.
