'Madchester' Wilson to undergo chemotherapy

Greater Manchester music icon and entrepreneur Anthony Wilson is due to be treated in Christie Hospital after being diagnosed with cancer, it has emerged.

The disease was discovered during a routine visit to his doctor, who identified something "seriously wrong" with his right lung. After draining, it was discovered that his right kidney was cancerous, reports the BBC.

His kidney was removed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Mr Wilson is now set for two five-day chemotherapy spells at Christie Hospital.

Mr Wilson founded the infamous Hacienda night club, birthplace of the internationally-recognised 'Madchester' phenomenon, and was one of the co-founders of Factory records.

He also managed some of Manchester's finest musical exports including the Happy Mondays, Joy Division and New Order.

The Salford-born music mogul has been an outspoken advocate of regional self-government for the north-west, which although initially successful, has been put on hold following the unsuccessful referendum in the north-east.
