Man City receives takeover offer from ex-player
24/04/2007
A former Manchester City football player has announced he wants to buy the club for £90 million.
Ray Ranson, who is heading up a British consortium, made a firm offer yesterday, which covers loans of about £24 million to major shareholders chairman John Wardle and David Makin, as well as the club's shares.
Mr Ranson, a multi-millionaire who previously tried to buy Aston Villa on two occasions, is also prepared to provide a transfer kitty of up to £20 million for new players, reports BBC Radio Manchester.
However, stock market rules mean that footballer-turned-businessman is unable to divulge details about the bid.
Man City is expected to respond to Mr Ranson's offer by Thursday.
It has also been reported that Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand, is interested in buying the club and has made a preliminary approach.
Mr Ranson, 46, who made over 200 appearances for Man City, also played for Birmingham City, Reading and Newcastle United. His footballing career ended due to injury in 1995.
