Man charged over footballer stabbing
12/12/2006
A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a professional footballer in a Manchester bar last month.
Robert Rimmer, 20, appeared at Manchester magistrates' court today over the stabbing of West Bromwich Albion midfielder Ronnie Wallwork, 29.
No plea was entered and he was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Square court on February 26th.
Mr Wallwork, who is currently on loan to Barnsley, has been discharged from hospital after suffering knife injuries to his stomach, hand and back.
The footballer was attending a private party at the Sugar Lounge on Whitworth Street when the attack took place. Bar staff provided immediate medical treatment before he was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Agent Neill Sillett has said that Mr Wallwork is likely to attempt a complete return to professional football sometime in the future.
