Manchester Airport 'booming'

Manchester is the biggest UK airport outside London both in terms of total passenger numbers and international scheduled passengers, new figures have shown.

Last year, 22.1 million - more than a third of the UK population - flew from Manchester, half of whom travelled to overseas destinations, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Since 1990, the number of passengers flying from Manchester - which now offers almost 60 international scheduled routes - has risen by 12 million.

The figures also show that the total passengers at all north-west airports increased by 157 per cent between 1990 and 2006.

Harry Bush, CAA group director, said: "Regional airports have continued to develop new services rapidly and have put themselves firmly on the map as gateways for travel to and from the regions they serve."

In the six months ending September 30th, Manchester Airport saw its profits rise by £700,000 to £61 million, according to the latest in-house statistics.
