Manchester Airport on security alert

10/08/2006

Passengers flying from Manchester Airport are facing major disruption after security services foiled an alleged plot to blow up aircraft travelling from the UK.

Travellers face delays of up to three hours at the north-west airport and police patrols at the site have been increased, with armed officers and sniffer dogs carrying out checks.

Domestic flights have been more widely affected at Manchester Airport than international routes, with most flights departing between one and three hours late.

Passengers are being issued with clear plastic bags to carry permitted items of hand luggage, such as travel documents and glasses.

Increased safety checks by additional security staff are being carried out and include searches of footwear. Any containers with liquid in have been banned from flights and all baby milk must be tasted by passengers first to ensure it is safe.

Airport officials are currently advising passengers to come to Manchester as normal and be prepared for disruption and increased security checks.

Terrorists reportedly planned to smuggle explosives onto a number of planes flying from the UK to the United States and detonate them in mid-air.
