Manchester crushes 10,000th untaxed car

Manchester City Council has said there will be no let-up in the campaign to crack down on untaxed drivers.

It reaffirmed its commitment as it announced that the 10,000th untaxed, unclaimed vehicle is to be crushed this week.

According to the council, untaxed vehicles are often used by criminals, so by crushing the vehicles the level of crime is expected to fall.

In fact, government figures reveal that more than 70 per cent of Brits who have untaxed vehicles have other criminal records.

Councillor Neil Swannick said: "The owners of cars which have been removed and crushed aren't people whose tax is just a few days overdue.

"[These] people apparently have no intention of taxing their vehicles at all."

He went on to say that untaxed cars are often badly maintained, dangerous and an eyesore to residents, workers and tourists.

In September, a Salford council solicitor had his Renault Clio towed away after police noticed that his tax disc was three years out-of-date.
