Manchester fights to keep wheel in motion

04/01/2007

Manchester council officials are fighting to keep Manchester's famous big wheel in the city before it closes on January 7th.

Council chiefs are meeting with World Tourist Attractions (WTA) – the owners of the 60m observation wheel – to talk about moving the wheel from Exchange Square to Cathedral Gardens.

Due to the fact that building work is about to start in the square, the wheel either needs moving or dismantling altogether.

However, it is understood that the WTA wants a significant reduction in the rent if the wheel is moved to the cathedral.

Margaret Nuttall, from the city council, told the BBC: "We are very pleased the wheel has been so well received throughout the years it has been here and we would like to see it continue in Manchester."

If talks between council officials and the wheel owners fail, then it is highly likely that the famous tourist attraction will be moved to another city.
