Manchester icon inspires collection of fiction
29/04/2007
The lyrics of Manchester icon and punk rock stalwart Mark E Smith have inspired a new collection of fiction.
Perverted by Language: Fiction inspired by The Fall is published by Serpent's Tail and brings together short stories written by writers such as Stewart Lee, Mick Jackson and Niall Griffiths, who have all taken their lead from songs by Smith and his band The Fall.
Some of the writers, including comedian Lee, will be performing their stories at The Ritz on July 1st as part of the Manchester International Festival.
Speaking to the BBC, Perverted by Language's editor Peter Wild said that he came up with the idea for the collection while interviewing writers for his website.
"In the course of interviewing, it came up that lots of people who write tend to like The Fall. I think that The Fall's frontman Mark E Smith is quite cerebral and literary himself," he said.
The Manchester International Event takes place for the first time this year and is set to become a biennial event on the city's cultural calendar.
