Manchester is England's second city, says poll

12/02/2007

A new BBC poll has confirmed what most Mancunians already believe, that Manchester is England's second most important city.

The survey reveals that 48 per cent of people think Manchester is England's second city, compared with 40 per cent who chose Birmingham. It also seems that Manchester is popular among the young, with 58 per cent of those aged between 16 and 24 saying that Manchester is the second city, compared with 38 per cent who thought it was Birmingham.

It is thought that the profile of Manchester has been raised by sporting successes such as the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the global fame of Manchester United. Furthermore, the city is also the birthplace of musical icons such as the Smiths, Oasis, the Stone Roses and the Happy Mondays.

Ian Simpson, the architect behind Deansgate's massive Beetham Tower, said: "What I think Manchester has at the moment, is that it just has a cool edge. I think most people know it's a bit cool to be here, to work here, and to be part of this."

The Labour Party 2006 conference, massive city centre regeneration, the creation of Media City at the Quays and the probable arrival of Britain's first supercasino have all raised Manchester's standing in recent years.
