Manchester maternity centres decision announced

The Royal Bolton Hospital is to become a centre of excellence for maternity and neonatal care, it has been announced.

Other super-centres include the Royal Oldham Hospital and St Mary's in central Manchester.

The hospitals will now receive millions of pounds in funding to develop their maternity and neonatal services.

Health bosses met in Manchester at the weekend to decide where to create the specialised centres following a massive public consultation.

David Fillingham, chief executive of the Royal Bolton Hospital, told Bolton News: "I'm absolutely delighted at the outcome, not just for Bolton, but for the area as a whole.

"We desperately needed to improve services for women and children across the whole of Greater Manchester and this decision will allow us to do that."

Salford's Hope Hospital will lose its maternity services, while the maternity ward at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury will close as a result of the decision.
