Manchester motorists urged to slow down on urban roads
04/10/2007
Greater Manchester motorists are being warned to be more vigilant when driving on the city-region's rural roads.
The warning comes after a government report shows that drivers in Greater Manchester are three time more likely to be killed on a rural road than an urban one.
Figures show that 97 people died on country roads in the north-west in 2006, with 103 fatalities in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the Greater Manchester fire and rescue service has said it is now rescuing more people trapped in cars than in burning buildings.
"Boy racers are using the roads as race tracks. People shouldn't speed in general and should pay attention to the conditions," said station watch manager Kev Barrow to Bolton News.
The Department for Transport has launched a campaign that urges motorists to become more aware of driving conditions and to keep their speed under control.
