Manchester named 17th worst place to live
15/10/2007
A new study that names the City of Manchester as one of the worst places to live is likely to cause outrage among councillors, businesses and residents.
A poll for Channel 4's Location, Location, Location programme has suggested that Manchester is the 17th worst place to live in Britain. The good news is that this is an improvement on last year's position of tenth place.
While the programme praises Manchester's hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2002, it points out that the city has the fifth-lowest life expectancy in the country.
Anticipating the discontent in Manchester, presenter Phil Spencer said: "Each year we seem to create a storm of controversy with this survey, but it's all based on official data.
"It's always edge-of-the-seat stuff when it comes to revealing the best and worst, and this year won't be any different."
Middlesbrough, Hull and Newham in east London took the top three positions for the worst places to live.
The best place to live will be announced on Location, Location, Location: Best and Worst Live show on Wednesday October 17th.
