Manchester people 'consider climate when travelling'
23/01/2008
Some 18 per cent of people in Greater Manchester have altered the way they travel due to concerns about the environment, new research reveals.
Increased publicity regarding climate change and individual carbon footprints has played a part in changing the way people from Manchester made their journeys in 2007, according to Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive's (GMPTE) survey of 1,000 residents.
Paul Griffiths, GMPTE's interim projects director, said that events like Live Earth heightened public awareness of climate change.
"Our latest research appears to show that people are making changes to their lives as a result," he added.
"Sharing your journey with other people is always going to be a more environmentally-friendly way of travelling."
Over Christmas, GMPTE ran a campaign that encouraged people in Manchester to leave their car behind and use public transport as much as possible.
