Manchester pledges support for cyclone victims
23/11/2007
Manchester City Council has said it is taking action to help the victims of the Bangladesh cyclone disaster.
Deputy leader Val Stevens said the city will support the Disaster Emergency Committee's 13 major aid agencies, which include Action Aid, Cafod, Save the Children, Oxfam and World Vision.
The city council has posted details of the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal on its website and information will be sent to all council employees to raise awareness.
"Our deepest sympathy and concern go out to the people of Bangladesh. They have suffered the most," said councillor Stevens.
"We feel that supporting the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal is the most efficient way of getting help as fast as possible to the most vulnerable people."
More than 3,400 people are confirmed dead after cyclone Sidr tore through southern and central Bangladesh on November 15th. Up to 300,000 people are thought to be without shelter.
