Manchester police in gun raid
29/08/2008
Greater Manchester Police has raided a house in Longsight and found six guns after issuing a drugs and firearms warrant.
The weapons seized were an AK-47 assault rifle, a home-made sub-machine gun, two Ingram Mac-10 machine guns and two pistols.
In addition, officers found 450 bullets, 150 ecstasy tablets and some cannabis. The police currently have two men in custody on suspicion of unlawful possession of firearms and drugs.
Chief Superintendent David Keller commented: "Greater Manchester Police is working hard to rid our communities of guns. We have all seen the headlines and we all know the devastating consequences firearms can cause."
He added that the recovery of the guns was a success for the people of Manchester as well as the police because it prevented the use of the firearms on the streets of the city.
The force enjoyed another success on Thursday when accountant Anthony Roberts, of Tanpits Lane, Burton, Lancashire, was sentenced to six years imprisonment after being found guilty of defrauding six charities.
