Manchester praised in Rough Guide to England

12/05/2008

Manchester "has no realistic English rival outside of London", according to the latest edition of The Rough Guide to England.

Both the city of Manchester and Salford Quays are praised by the guide, which is published around the world.

Manchester's Imperial War Museum, for example, is championed by the guide as an architectural gem.

While England as a whole gets a bashing for its self-importance and obsession with C-list celebrities, it is hailed for its "thriving pop culture" and "dynamic" arts scene.

The Lake District also came in praise but Blackpool was described as "shamelessly brash".

Visit England spokesperson Patricia Yates said: "Our celebrity culture is not necessarily a bad thing.

"Celebrities like the princes and David Beckham allow people from outside our country to identify with England."

The guide claims to take a detailed look at England's cultural life, history, literature and politics.
