Manchester to be next capital city?
24/05/2007
Manchester could the UK's next capital city if climate change makes London "too hot and uncomfortable", according to peers in the House of Lords.
The assertion came after the Lonely Planet travel guide said that Manchester could take over as the first city if London ever "quit" its role as capital or "was fired for some kind of wrong-doing".
During a light-hearted exchange in the chamber about how global warming could affect the UK's tourism industry, Lord Davies said that Manchester's future "looks bright".
According to the BBC, he went on to describe Manchester as "a very important tourist destination indeed at present".
He also asked why Europeans had not yet discovered northern England as place to visit.
The latest Lonely Planet guide says that Manchester is a "modern metropolis embracing change like few others in Europe".
