Manchester to deliver CO2 action plan

09/11/2007

Manchester is one of three cities chosen by the government to develop action plans to slash carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The low carbon cities programme will see the Carbon Trust and the Energy Saving Trust working with Manchester, Bristol and Leeds to develop individual plans to achieve low carbon economies.

Possible initiatives include renewable energy, promoting alternative transport and encouraging the development of tri-generation, which creates power, heat and cooling from the same source.

Joan Ruddock, minister for climate change, said: "Our cities were once at the forefront of the industrial revolution. Now they have the opportunity to lead the way again and be the driving force behind our push to a low carbon economy."

She went on to say that the low carbon cities programme will demonstrate that meeting the challenges of climate change and delivering prosperity are compatible.

Meanwhile, the world's first large-scale eco-friendly data centre is being built in Manchester, complete with wind turbines and solar panels, while heat produced from the servers will be converted into electricity.
