25/01/2007

The Queen is visiting Manchester at Easter to hand out Maundy Thursday alms to 81 men and 81 women, it has emerged.

Specially minted Maundy coins will be presented by the Queen, who is head of the Church of England, to people chosen in recognition of their service to the Church and to the community.

The service will take place at the city's cathedral and it is the first time that the centuries-old ceremony will be held in Manchester.

Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said: "I am delighted Her Majesty has chosen to hold the Maundy Ceremonies in Manchester.

"Her visit will be a highlight for the city, Greater Manchester and the diocese."

The Yeomen of the Guard will carry the alms during the service. It is traditional for the coins to be distributed in ceremonial red and white purses.

The Queen has handed out alms purses at over 50 Maundy Thursday services throughout her reign which began in 1952.
