Manchester's alcohol consumption 'dangerously high'
16/10/2007
Mancunians and Salfordians are drinking dangerous levels of alcohol, a new study has claimed.
According to the North West Public Health Observatory, eight per cent of Manchester residents are drinking "harmful" amounts of alcohol.
The situation is not much better in Salford and Rochdale, where seven per cent of people aged over 16 are heavy drinkers.
Across England as a whole, the rate of alcohol-specific hospital admissions has climbed for both men and women over the past 12 months, but the situation is worst in Manchester and Liverpool.
Alcohol-related crime was highest in Nottingham, followed by Manchester.
Professor Mark Bellis, director of the centre, said that one in 20 people are drinking enough to make alcohol-related diseases "practically inevitable".
High alcohol consumption increases the risk of liver disease and cancer, stroke, hypertension, gastritis and dementia.
