Massive PFI waste deal for Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester's waste disposal authority has appointed a private finance initiative (PFI) contract worth £3 billion to a consortium that consists of Viridor Waste Management and Laing Roads.

The biggest deal of its kind in Europe, the PFI deal will result in £300 million of investment in new waste disposal infrastructure in the city-region.

Handling 1.4 million tonnes of municipal waste every year, the consortium will run the facilities for 25 years.

John Burns, from Defra, said: "A high-quality environmental solution in Greater Manchester is an essential contribution to the delivery of national climate change, waste and energy policies.

"In addition, the progress that this procurement is making is helping to build market and funding confidence that is so essential to securing new investment in waste management infrastructure."

Organic waste expert TEG Group, which is the supplier of In Vessel Composting technology to the consortium, is expected to build four plants in the city and its conurbation to process kitchen and household waste.
