Mayor of the Year title goes to Manchester man
07/12/2006
Councillor Mohammed Afzal Khan, former Lord Mayor of Manchester City Council, has won the award for Mayor of the Year 2005-06.
The Co-Operative Bank-sponsored competition sets out to find the mayor who has had the "most exceptional year in office", with Councillor Khan granted the top spot out of 50 nominations for his contribution to the region.
The former Lord Mayor attended 900 civic engagements in his year in office, promoting the Manchester region on a local and international level.
He also received a cheque for £1,000 as part of the prize, which he has chosen to donate to Francis House Children's Hospice.
Councillor Khan says: "To be awarded with the title of the Mayor of the Year from the Co-operative Bank is a magnificent honour.
"It has been a privilege to serve the community and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of being Lord Mayor of Manchester and will always have very fond memories of my year in office."
He adds that he dedicates the award to his family and team who supported him during his time as mayor.
Councillor Khan has also emerged as front-runner in the contest for Labour candidate for Rochdale in the next general election.
The Asian News reports that he has received 11 nominations for the position, which puts him one ahead of Simon Danczuk, his nearest rival.
