Melua to headline Proms in the Park
09/08/2006
Katie Melua has indicated that she is "pleased" to be returning to Manchester for the BBC Proms in the Park next month.
As on of the biggest selling female artists of the last two years, Melua is to be the headline act at the event, which takes place at Heaton Park on September 9th.
She will be following in the footsteps of soprano Hayley Westenra, who led the performances at last year's BBC Proms in the Park, Manchester.
Councillor Mark Hackett, executive member for culture and leisure, said: "We are delighted that Katie Melua has chosen to sing at Manchester's BBC Proms in the Park, it is a great honour to welcome one of the world's top singers to our splendid Heaton Park, which is a perfect backdrop to Katie's spectacular stage performance."
He added that 10,000 people are expected to attend "from all over the region" to experience Katie Melua's "mesmerizing voice" and "the rousing music from the Manchester-based BBC Philharmonic".
Other cities being used for the BBC Proms in the Park are London, Glasgow, Belfast and Swansea.
