Men arrested in LS Lowry raids

05/11/2007

Several people in Manchester have been arrested as part of a police investigation into the theft of five LS Lowry paintings.

Greater Manchester Police raided a number of addresses in Tameside after receiving information from the public and arrested four men on suspicion of robbery, the BBC has reported.

The paintings, which were taken from a house in Cheadle Hulme in May, have a total value of more than £1 million. As well as the artworks, LS Lowry's palette and paintbrushes were also stolen.

Detective Constable Chris Barnes said: "We have had a number of people come forward, both as a result of the media appeals and the recent Crimewatch appeal.

"A £70,000 reward remains available to anyone who provides information leading to the recovery and return of these paintings."

In June, an art enthusiast paid £3.7 million for Lowry's Good Friday, Daisy Nook, making it the most expensive painting by the Manchester artist ever sold.
