Mental health staff to strike for third time

26/09/2007

Manchester mental health workers are to strike this week over the suspension of union official Karen Reissmann.

It is the third time this month that a strike has been called over the issue, which began when the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust claimed the Unison official brought the trust into disrepute.

But the union believes that Ms Reissmann was suspended because she voiced concerns about NHS cuts. She had previously organised two walkouts against possible staff reductions.

A leading activist told the Socialist Worker: "Management are absolutely fuming about the latest strike dates.

"And since they heard that we plan to lobby the trust directors' meeting on Thursday of this week, they have moved the venue four times."

On September 9th, mental health workers gathered in St Peters Square to demonstrate their concerns.

The psychiatric nurses, care assistants and occupation therapists have also taken the fight to the Labour party conference in Bournemouth.
