Metrolink expansion receives £8m boost

01/10/2007

A regional regeneration agency has said it will inject £8 million into the Metrolink expansion project.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency's (NWDA) cash injection means that tram frequencies on the Manchester to Eccles line will double during peak time.

To enable this increase in service, the money will go towards the purchase of new trams, thereby doubling capacity to ten trams every hour.

Steven Broomhead, NWDA chief executive, said he was delighted to announce extra funding for this "important infrastructure project".

"It will help to support the continued economic growth of the Manchester city-region in a sustainable manner and complements other major investments by the public and private sectors," he added.

Last week, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Enterprise announced the launch of a colour-coded map of the local rail and Metrolink network.

The layout of the map is similar to the design of the famous London Underground map.
