Metrolink season tickets set to rise

Following the introduction of new single and return fares in November, the cost of some Metrolink season tickets will increase from February 1st.

Quarterly tickets will rise by a maximum of £7, while weekly tickets will rise by up to 60p.

This is the first time in nearly four years that season tickets have been hiked and the average changes will remain below the level of inflation, according to the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE).

However, there will be no price increases for monthly, annual or child tickets.

Michael Renshaw, GMPTE service delivery director, said the increases were needed "to keep up with the costs of running the service".

"We've tried to make sure the rises are as low as possible and many tickets won't be going up at all," he stated.

"We've also made Metrolink more affordable for families by reducing most weekday family tickets and introducing a special low rate at weekends."

In November, transport chiefs announced they had ordered four new Metrolink trams to take passengers through Salford Quays from 2010 – in time for the opening of the BBC's new headquarters.
