More buses hinges on C-charge

The reputedly busiest bus route in Europe - Oxford Road in Manchester - could get busier if the planned congestion charges go ahead.

Money from fees for driving through two areas of Manchester would fund improvements to the bus services.

Both a government grant of £1.5 billion and borrowings of £1.2 billion would hinge on a yes to the C-charge as well as plans to bring in a further £0.1 billion on the back of that.

This is in addition to investment from the Department for Transport on rail facilities.

Public consultation on the C-charge ends on October 10th, with residents being asked to post their decisions by December.

Bus improvements would include extra services at peak times to and from local areas to Manchester city centre and more early morning, evening and Sunday services.

This would mean some buses running at a rate of one every four minutes to the city centre.
