More police will march with pride at parade

24/08/2006

More than double the number of police officers and staff who participated in last year's Manchester Pride gay parade will take part in this weekend's event.

About 125 officers and staff from Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Cumbria and Lancashire, Warwickshire, Humberside, north Wales, Durham and Merseyside, will march in the parade, which takes place on Saturday, August 26th.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Taylor, responsible for criminal justice and diversity at GMP, has welcomed the fact that more police will take part in the parade and views it as an indicator of changing attitudes in the police community.

He added: "We have worked in partnership with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities for many years and by continuing to do this, we hope that relationships between officers and the LGBT groups will grow and strengthen.

"It is only by working in partnership with the communities that we serve, that we will ensure we have an accessible and inclusive police service."

The annual Manchester Pride festival celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life. The celebrations started in the early 1990s to raise money in support of those affected by HIV.
