Motor sports come to Manchester

14/08/2006

In the first event of its kind since the end of the season in April, six A1 Grand Prix race cars took to the streets the Manchester city centre on Sunday afternoon.

The cars from the Australian, Irish, Chinese, Lebanese, Malaysian and Great British A1 teams took to the 1.5 km purpose-built course, hitting speeds of up to 70 mph,.

The drivers and teams took part in an hour-long motor demonstration to promote the 2006/07 A1 Grand Prix race season, as part of the three-day Sky Festival, which took place in Manchester over the weekend.

The motor event was kicked-off by model Lady Isabella Hervey, who was seen changing a car tyre on a real A1 racing car in the simulated pit stop before the start of the car parade.

Around 25,000 people lined the streets of Manchester to watch the cars race by and visit the race paddock, where they were given the opportunity to try on a race suit, sit in a race car and take part in the tyre change challenge, which was won by two local lads in a time of 14.71 seconds.
