New Metrolink trams ordered

Manchester transport chiefs have ordered four new trams to take passengers through Salford Quays from 2010.

More than £19 million is being invested on the line improvements and new trams, which are in addition to eight extra trams that we ordered earlier this year.

Salford Quays will soon be home to several BBC departments and transport chiefs believe the new trams will be sufficient to link the new mediacity:uk site to the rest of the Metrolink network.

David Leather, the passenger transport executive chief executive, said: "The four new trams will allow us to provide a new service between Cornbrook and mediacity:uk in Salford Quays.

"The Salford Quays extension to mediacity:uk is part of a major expansion of the Metrolink network. We expect to order more trams in the near future for the new lines to Oldham, Rochdale, Droylsden, and Chorlton."

In September, the Northwest Regional Development Agency injected £8 million into the Eccles to Manchester city centre line in order to double the number of trams every hour during peak time.

Work on the Eccles Metrolink extension is expected to start in 2009.
