New Year's Eve firework event mooted

09/07/2008

Although New Year's Eve is some months off, Manchester city council looks set to back plans to hold a family-friendly firework display in the city centre at the end of 2008.

Residents and local businesses have told the council they support the idea, and city leaders are now looking at the logistics of holding such a major event.

Councillor Mike Amesbury said Manchester has a reputation for delivering impressive events.

"It is important we continue to listen to the needs and wishes of Manchester people as part of this remit," he added.

The council has already consulted with the fire and rescue service, the NHS, Greater Manchester Police and transport chiefs.

Final recommendations will be presented and considered at a council meeting next week.

The council came under fierce criticism last year for failing to organise a New Year's Eve firework event.
