Oldham man appears in court over 1975 moors murder

A man accused of murdering an 11-year-old girl who was stabbed to death three decades ago has denied the charge.

Market trader Ronald Castree, 53, of Oldham, pleaded not guilty at Bradford Crown Court to the murder of Lesley Molseed.

An application was made for bail but the judge, Stephen Gullick, postponed his decision until Monday. Mr Castree is due to stand trial for the murder on October 22nd.

Lesley disappeared on October 5th 1975 after leaving her home in Rochdale to run an errand for her mother. Her body was found three days later on Rishworth Moor, West Yorkshire, above the A672 Oldham to Halifax Road. She had been stabbed 12 times.

In 1976, Stefan Kiszko, a tax clerk from Rotherham, was convicted of Lesley's murder and subsequently spent 16 years in prison before his conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal.

He died shortly after his release.
