Police question boy over 12-year-old gunshot victim
02/05/2007
Detectives are continuing to question a 16-year-old boy over the death of a girl who was shot in the head on a Manchester council estate.
Kamilah Peniston, 12, was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary with a single gunshot wound to the head after paramedics and police were called to her home in Wembley Road in Gorton at 19:30 BST on Monday.
She underwent surgery but died yesterday after being transferred to Pendlebury Children's hospital in Swinton.
Neighbours have said that Kamilah's 16-year-old brother carried her out of the family home, shouting "Get an ambulance. I've shot my sister".
A handgun converted to fire live ammunition was found at the house by Greater Manchester Police officers.
Superintendent John O'Hare said: "One can only imagine what is going through the minds of the family at this time. Our hearts go out to the family and wider community.
"It really does bring home the tragic and really evil consequences of firearms within our community."
He went on to urge anyone who has any information about people selling, converting or possessing guns to alert police immediately.
