Post Office announces closures
10/09/2008
A total of 880 postal workers' jobs are under threat as the Post Office announced the closure of three depots.
Centres in Bolton, Oldham and Stockport will shut with operations transferred to Manchester and Preston.
The depots will close in two years time forcing compulsory redundancies unions warned.
Bolton secretary of the Communication Workers' Union, where 400 jobs were under threat at a sorting office, Mick Hargreaves, told the Bolton Evening News: "We will continue to campaign to keep it open. Around 400 jobs will be lost and that will impact the economy in Bolton."
News of the closure came on the same day the company announced it was spending millions of pounds on new staff uniforms.
MPs have criticised the move for potentially compromising services while unions have said they would fight the cuts.
However, a Royal Mail spokesperson told Crain's: "Given natural turnover, everybody that wants to continue working with us will."
The Royal Mail recently saw cutbacks like slashing deliveries to one-a-day and closing local Post Offices.
