Public to have their say on c-charge
28/07/2008
Greater Manchester's ten councils have agreed to hold a referendum on whether to introduce a congestion charge to help pay for improvements to public transport.
The poll is expected to take place in early December. A special committee will be created to work out the details of the referendum.
But the outcome of the vote is not binding on the ten councils, which means even if voters say yes to the congestion charge, councillors may have other plans.
Lord Peter Smith, leader of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities, said the public now has an opportunity to vote on a very important decision.
"People will have their say on whether they want to say yes to a transformed public transport system in Greater Manchester including a congestion charge," he stated.
Every home in Greater Manchester has been sent a full-colour brochure explaining the merits of the two-tier congestion zone and the proposed transformation of buses, trains and trams.
Housebuilders are being urged to return their comments on the consultation document provided.
