Salford Lads Club set to become top icon

19/01/2007

Salford Lads Club, which acquired fame when it appeared on the inner sleeve of the Smiths' The Queen is Dead album, is tipped to become England's favourite icon.

At present, the club in Ordsall is second only to the Household Cavalry in the online competition, according to the Salford Advertiser, and has seen off iconic contenders including Abbey Road, the Aston Martin and Doctor Who's Tardis.

Leslie Holmes, who works at the club, told the newspaper that it "has brightened lives and made good citizens of thousands of lads, including footballers from Manchester United and Manchester City".

The club, which has been open for more than a hundred years, was originally designed just for boys, although girls are now welcome.

It rose to fame in the 1980s when Stephen Wright photographed the Smiths in the club's main doorway.

Another Manchester entry, the controversial B of the Bang, which is Britain's tallest sculpture, has also been nominated as a great English icon.

The survey by Icons is being carried out on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
