Salford MP apologies over 10p tax rate debacle

Salford MP Hazel Blears has apologised to the residents of Greater Manchester angered over the abolition of the 10p rate of income tax.

The communities and local government secretary told BBC Radio 4's Any Questions? that she acknowledged the strength of feeling there is on this issue.

She admitted that the last few days had been tough for Labour but said the government has now taken action to make sure the poorest people "actually do not lose out".

"I've been coordinating the local election. I've knocked on more doors this last few weeks than probably a lot of people ... and it has been an issue to people out there," stated Ms Blears.

"I've had not just my ear bent. I've had some pretty tough conversations with people these last few weeks. I am sorry about that. I'm sorry that people have gone through this."

Ms Blears defended other aspects of the Budget, saying it helped some of the poorest people in society.

It has not yet been made clear whether all people adversely affected by the abolition of the 10p tax rate will be refunded or just those aged between 60 and 64 and those under 25.
