Salford to help Wigan schools

03/10/2007

Schools in Wigan are to receive a £230 million injection after the borough council entered into an agreement with Salford.

Salford's decision to let Wigan have a share of the government's £45billion school investment money means that the west Manchester borough can start improving schools in 2009 rather than 2013.

Wigan council said the move is a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to provide first-class facilities to children.

"Salford City Council is already at an advanced stage in the process, so it makes perfect sense for us to tap into their expertise and look to work with Salford's business partners," said councillor Brian Wilson.

Wigan council has said it will conduct a review of secondary school education and one possibility may be to reduce the number of schools to reflect falling pupil numbers.

Education watchdog Ofsted recently described ten of Salford's schools as "outstanding".
