Salford will benefit if I get the job, says deputy leader hopeful
30/05/2007
Salford MP Hazel Blears has said that the city will benefit if she becomes deputy leader of the Labour Party.
Ms Blears, who is currently the chair of the party, told a local newspaper that her election to the post would mean she will have "an even bigger say on policy", which could lead to a spate of new jobs in Salford.
Citing the creation of the Media City at the quays, which will soon be home to several BBC departments, she went on to say that one of her challenges was make sure that people in Salford "have the skills to get the new jobs on offer".
Commenting on the achievements of Labour at national and local level, she told the Salford Advertiser that "what we have achieved has transformed this city".
"If you look at whole areas in Salford, whether it's Langworthy, the quays or Broughton, it is changing really fast and dramatically improving," she added.
Salford-born Ms Blears recently revealed that she had a cameo role when she was five-years-old in the classic black and white movie A Taste of Honey, which was filmed in the city in 1961.
