Topshop fails to put Salford on the map

11/09/2008

Big brands would invest in Salford, but some do not even know where it is.

In a recent interview with Crain's Manchester Business, a spokesperson for Topshop and Topman said the company would not consider the "suburb".

"Salford would be too small a market for us to consider trading in," the spokesperson told Crain's.

The area was granted city status in 1926 and has a population of 200,000 residents in its wider area.

The spokesperson told Crain's the clothing company already had a store and two department store concessions.

It had also recently expanded in the Trafford Centre.

However, Salford councillor Martin O'Neill said that towns like Swinton had a large population with high footfall and lots of traffic.

There were also plenty of office workers who would be prime targets for big brand stores like Topshop.

"I want to make sure that kids coming out of school in Swinton don't spend all their money in the bookmakers or the pub then end up in the funeral home next door," he told Crain's.
