Ferdinand calls for knife amnesty

30/11/2006

Rio Ferdinand has called for Britain's youngsters to stop carrying knives after the death of schoolboy Damilola Taylor.

Damilola was stabbed to death with a beer bottle outside a council estate in Peckham on November 27th 2000.

Ferdinand, a former Peckham resident, has joined Damilola's father in the anti-knife campaign, calling for young people to stop carrying weapons.

Rio told the Sun: "If you love your parents, spare them the agony of losing you. Promise to not carry a weapon."

He added that the Damilola Taylor Trust is asking for children to sign a petition with a t-shirt released backing the drive.

Schools can get involved in the scheme by asking pupils to make the promise: "In memory of Damilola Taylor, I will pledge to never carry a weapon."

Manchester United remain in the running for the Premiership title, though questions surround the current squad.

The Scotsman reports that United's win over Everton exposed the "lacklustre nature of United's play".
