Rooney accepts damages claim
12/04/2006
Wayne Rooney has accepted £100,000 in damages from two tabloid newspapers over reports claiming he hit his fiancee Coleen McLoughlin following a furious row last year.
The Sun and The News of the World both ran stories saying the England and Manchester United striker had slapped his fiancee at Brasingamens nightclub in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, on April 10th last year.
Rooney, 20, and Miss McLoughlin, 19, have admitted they were embroiled in a row but both have always denied the claims he struck her.
The footballer's lawyer Keith Schilling commenced legal proceedings on April 20th last year against The Sun for libel.
And at the high court in London today, both newspapers' publishers, News Group Newspapers Ltd, accepted the reports were false.
The two parties are said to have agreed on the £100,000 settlement and a public apology is to be printed in tomorrow's Sun and this weekend's News of the World.
