Lee Evans breaks records in Manchester
21/11/2005
Sweaty comic Lee Evans has set the world record for a solo act performing to the biggest audience, after appearing at the MEN Arena in Manchester.
Evans performed in front of 10,108 people in Manchester as part of the funnyman's 32-date tour of the UK.
The popular comedian beat the previous record of 8,700, set by cross-dressing fellow comic Eddie Izzard.
"When I started out 20 years ago I could never have imagined that I would be selling out more nights at Wembley than Coldplay," said Evans.
The gurning comedian has starred in various Hollywood movies since winning the Perrier Award for comedy in 1993, including Mousehunt, There's Something About Mary and Funny Bones.
Craig Glenday, editor of Guinness World Records, said: "It's an incredible achievement to sell out these huge arenas night after night and he fully deserves his place in the Guinness World Records books."
Manchester is increasingly becoming the UK's comedy hotspot, with local comedians Peter Kay and Johnny Vegas leading the way.
Comedy favourites David Walliams and Matt Lucas arrived in Manchester last week for their Little Britain show, although their performance has proved so popular they are returning to the city next year in hastily added dates at the MEN Arena all of which have already sold out.
