Manchester prepares for Smiths gigs
04/01/2006
Iconic musician Morrissey has announced a new UK tour to coincide with the launch of his new album with four gigs planned for his native Manchester.
Morrissey, who shot to fame as the lead singer of cult band The Smiths in the 1980s, attracts a huge following and is set to kick off a 30-date tour of the UK when his new album is released in March.
Meanwhile, two more former members of The Smiths have teamed up for the first time since the band split in 1987 to perform at a charity gig in the city.
Guitarist Johnny Marr and bass player Andy Rourke are due to take to the stage at the Manchester v Cancer concert later this month, which also includes other noted Manchester musicians such as Badly Drawn Boy and Doves.
Marr laughed off suggestions that he and Rourke were creating history by playing together again.
"We do it every week, but people don't know that. We do it at the Frog and Bucket," he joked to the BBC.
Rourke added: "All the musicians in Manchester know each other anyway, so we are just going to get them all to intermingle and jam and do cover versions.
"As the evening goes on and people get more and more into the spirit of things then the unexpected will happen, we'll see.
"It will be a one-off thing that you are not going to see anywhere else ever again."
